“But what could the international community do to stop Putin from invading countries at will?” people ask. “Surely, there isn’t anything that can be done.”
Yes, folks, there is a lot that can be done. Putin and his gang of bandits have been robbing the people of Russia for decades. The US and other Western nations could prevent these criminals from spending that money in style. Here is what could be done:
1. No US and EU entrance visas should be granted to anybody working for the government of the Russian Federation or their family members.
2. The Russian bandits who are now in the US and EU and their family members should be immediately deported back to Russia.
3. The bank accounts the bandits keep in the US and EU banks should be arrested.
4. No private financial operations should be allowed to be conducted by the members of the Russian government outside of the Russian Federation.
5. End trade agreements with Russia.
You can’t hurt Putin with military means. But you can hurt him plenty through finance. Isn’t that where the US is supposed to be so good? Finance?
Something as a simple deportation of a couple hundred of the kids of the bandits and the confiscation of their US and EU palaces and castles will be a huge argument in any discussion with Putin.
Putin went nuts over the Magnitsky Act. Which means this method works.
Do you think Nato encroaching on Russia’s borders played a big part in what is happening presently?

If NATO didn’t exist at all, today’s events would be exactly the same.

IT would be easy, but chicken shit leaders in the EU and US are too afraid.
No EU or US visas for Russians from any part of Ukraine occupied by Russia. No permission for flights that originate (or cross) Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia.
Immediate deportation of Russians from any part of Ukraine occupied by Russia.
Something tells me that “Russians” in Ukraine care more about having access to the west than being part of Mother Russia.
This would be a little difficult but doable and would not cost any lives. It won’t happen because it would inconvenience too many moneyed interests.

Short translation: the purpose of the aggression against Ukraine is to show Iran that anybody without nuclear weapons can be eaten alive. Iran resumes its nuclear program, everybody becomes preoccupied by Iran, the oil prices go up.

There are covert forms of military action the U.S. could probably take. For example, send in Special Forces to train up Ukrainian resistance forces, supplies to Ukrainian forces, etc…

This is a road to nowhere. What’s the point? People will die, and for what?
The best way is to punish Putin’s bandits where it hurts. Putin let over a hundred young soldiers die on Kursk submarine because he doesn’t give a straw for anybody’s life. The only place where he can be hurt is the money.

I agree that the cost of lives should be taken into account. It would also depend on what the Ukrainian people wanted to do. If they didn’t want to be engaging in that kind of fighting, plenty understandable. The point however would be to make it so painful for Russian forces to be in Ukraine that they would be forced to retreat. Sort of like what the U.S. did with the Soviets in Afghanistan.

“Sort of like what the U.S. did with the Soviets in Afghanistan.”
– The Soviets in Afghanistan were defeated by the same people, using the same tactics and the same weapons who now have completely and utterly defeated the US, making it so painful for them that they are forced to retreat.

The Soviets were beating the Afghanistan peoples for quite some time until the U.S. started supplying the Afghan forces with weapons and equipment to fight back. The U.S. in Afghanistan today has not followed the same tactics of the Soviets, which consisted of randomly machine gunning Afghan peoples from attack helicopters, making bombs designed to look like toys to trick Afghan children, etc…the U.S. also, with Obama, never committed the forces needed to Afghanistan and because Obama announced timed with draw dates, he completely undermined the whole war.
