Hurt Feelings and Research

A colleague distributed an article he wants us to discuss. The gist of the article is that the author suggests that any kind of scholarly research that might hurt her feelings should be forcibly stopped.

The best part of this is that the author claims to be a feminist. The second best part is that people who write this kind of crap never consider the possibility that research in the areas they approve of (such as, say, global warming, evolution, Marxist theory, gender studies, etc.) might also just happen to be found offensive by somebody.

Of course, I’m not going to participate in the discussion because it hurts my feelings.

P.S. Now do you understand why I was miserable teaching in the Ivies?

  1. The comments I looked at seemed to be treating the article with some portion of the scorn it deserves and well enough that even opinionated me has nothing to add (and that’s saying something).

  2. HIghly educated people also routinely ignore what I have to say, because a long time ago I came from somewhere they disapproved of. That shows deep commitment to one’s emotions, not critical thinking.

  3. This is a comment on that article:

Instead of summoning the thought police, the proper way to combat offensive research is to disprove it. That may take a bit more effort than just whining in The Crimson, but ultimately it is how we progress as a society.

Governments during Galileo’s time tried to suppress offensive research. For the sake of humanity, I’m quite glad they didn’t succeed.

I could not have said it better!
