How Teachers Are Trained

The following video is puzzling and disturbing.

The description of the video on YouTube says:

This presenter was one of several consultants flown in from California and the United Kingdom for the Chicago Public Schools’ Office of Strategic School Support Services’ special network. This is a professional development for teachers of Saturday ISAT preparation classes.

This sad mockery of the very concept of professional training is delivered by some brainless robot who obviously doesn’t know the first thing about teaching. This better not be paid for by the taxpayers of the state of Illinois of whom I am one.

It is beyond offensive that a state is going broke while pompous fools are being flown in from all over the world to peddle their useless garbage. And what exactly is “Chicago Public Schools’ Office of Strategic School Support Services”? Do my taxes also pay for the salaries and the offices of all those time-wasters who do nothing but degrade teachers?

  1. There is such a massive swarm of grifters and con artists latched on to education (both secondary and college) in the US, it’s tragic. For some reason, people are easily convinced that the sole requirement to be an authority on teaching is to never have actually done it.

      – SO TRUE. This is, sadly, a field that attracts crowds of con artists.

  2. If this is an example of the “good” pedagogy that they want the teachers they’re training to use, then please shoot me before I ever teach in Chicago or ever send a child to be educated in Chicago.

  3. Why are they training presumably educated adults with rote repetition as if they don’t understand words?
Are they being drilled to some kind of memorization test?
Do they not have the ability to take notes? Does the presenter not know how to use slides or Powerpoint?
My mind just left my body out of boredom.

  4. I finally just watched this video. It enraged me. I agree. It’s purpose is to humiliate and break down teachers. I am amazed that everyone in the room is dutifully repeating what the corporate drone is asking. If I were in the room, I would refuse to repeat or take notes. I feel like this is a grave injustice and an assault on the dignity and professionalism of the teachers. I’m surprisingly angered by this video!

    1. This is Chicago, and the teachers in Chicago public schools have been persecuted and beaten down by the vicious city authorities. They probably fear the consequences of refusing to participate.

I was also enraged by this video. This is a show of insulting disrespect towards teachers.
