At the dinner celebrating the International Women’s Day, an ethnic Ukrainian made a passionate pro-Putin speech. An ethnic Jew grew very annoyed. Another ethnic Ukrainian got angry and denounced Putin.
In the meanwhile, the ethnic Ukrainian / Jewish blogger was thinking, “If the only ethnic Russian in the bunch were here, he’d let us all know why Ukraine’s independence needs to be defended at all costs.”

These problems existed between Ukraine and Russia long before the US came into existence. There are centuries of deep animosity that cannot be reduced to some fad du jour in a country that was not even around when the whole issue started.

But, the US came into existence in 1776 the same year that the Russian Empire defeated the Ottoman Empire and Crimean Khanate and made the Khanate a Russian vassal state. So the US was around when the Crimean peninsula and southern Ukraine came under Russian domination.
