PUPPPS in the Second Pregnancy

Nobody wants to research and discuss this horrible affliction, so this is what I just found out and what all women need to know.

If you had PUPPPS in your first pregnancy, there is a 30% probability you will get it in the subsequent pregnancies. I just spoke to a leading specialist and this is what he told me.

“But I read on the Internet that you never get it more than once,” I babbled.

“Where is it that you said you worked?” the doctor asked with a tired smile.

“I’m a college professor,” I said. “And yes, I see your point. I hate it when students say this phrase, too.”

So here it is. And by the way, there is absolutely no cure for PUPPPS. You can maybe try to alleviate the symptoms somewhat with a battery of drugs that will mess you up in every other way but you’ll still have to endure excruciating pain until you deliver and very probably for 8 weeks after.

I am very, very sorry for those who are undergoing this horror right now. I’ve been there, and I’m so so sorry to be a bearer of these bad news. But I believe it’s better to know and see the future clearly.

I’m not pregnant, if anybody’s wondering.

  1. I never even heard of it until you wrote about it. It’s so strange that such a common ailment receives so little attention. I’m so sorry to hear this. But perhaps you can take comfort in the flip side: there is a 70% chance that you WON’T be afflicted by it in subsequent pregnancies.

    1. No, it’s not common at all. A person has a 0,02% chance to get it. However, if you got it once, chances you get it again go up to 30%. 😦

Knowing my luck, though, I’m guessing my chances are about 130%.

  2. I *was* wondering, when the headline popped up in my blogreader. Those are not the odds I would have wished for you, and “well, they could be crappier!’ isn’t as consoling as one would like it to be.

  3. I had also never heard of it before you wrote about it. I’m sorry that there’s any chance of anyone getting it, ever. That’s awful.

My two pregnancies were pretty dissimilar. I’m not sure if that’s because I was working during one but not during the other or what. (I was super exhausted during the first pregnancy but not so bad in the second.) I do hear that pregnancies are either very similar or very different for individual women. But who knows?
