So It Goes On

Another person was shot dead today in St. Louis. It seems that the only thing these police know how to do is kill people. They probably think a great way to make their jobs easier is to mow down as much population as possible.

  1. It seems like because there is not a clear line as to what comprises authority, there is a battle for authority. Like I said, this could relate to a general conceptual fuzziness about justice, since everybody and everything is considered more or less the same, no matter what their actions.

Sorry Musteryou but I have to disagree – there is double standard when it comes to journalists. If you’re a member of the big corporate media like CNN, you’re embedded with the “troops” and write nice pro-police stories with a heavy reliance on unidentified sources and “a friend of.”

“More than 1,000 protesters rallied outside of CNN’s Atlanta headquarters on Monday to voice their frustration with the news network’s coverage of the Ferguson, Mo., protests and the killing of Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson, and protest police brutality generally.”

On the other hand, if you’re a journalist with other media then it’s a different story. Ryan Devereaux, a reporter for The Intercept and Lukas Hermsmeier, a German reporter for Bild were shot in the back on Monday night by Ferguson police riding in armoured personal carriers (Bearcats) despite identifying themselves as press. Later they were jailed for “refusal to disperse” in spite of the fact that they were by themselves on a side street, they were never read their rights and were tricked out of being allowed to make a phone call to a lawyer.

“Hermsmeier and I got out of jail this morning. None of the other people who are still there, as far as I know, work for well-funded, high-profile media organizations.”

  3. Police is now confiscating supplies for mitigating tear gas injuries. There’s no way in hell any of those supplies would be a danger to anyone, nor would they allow someone to withstand tear gas. They just mean people won’t get permanent eye damage from it. They’re also using a sound weapon that’s 100 times louder than a Boeing 747 taking off. When all this had started, my opinion was that arresting the killer cop would be enough. After I’ve seen permanent-disability-causing weapons used on all and sundry though, I don’t think anything less than firing all of Ferguson police and arresting the killer cop would do. Abominable. Absolutely abominable.

  4. A video of this shooting, taken by a witness, got released today. The horrified witnesses wondered why the cops couldn’t tase the guy (or use the industrial strength pepper spray – there was more than one cop too to be a back up to each other and none of the witnesses was in the immediate vicinity, close to an attack). Their default response, at least when it comes to certain people, is to almost immediately shoot to kill. Zero attempt to defuse a situation or use a non-lethal way to subdue someone.

In the video, he didn’t lunge at anyone (as police said in their statement – or have the knife poised over his head; his arms were at his side). He clearly was not mentally well, but he also wasn’t carrying a gun. Also – they shot him several times, including after he’d fallen to the ground. And put his body in handcuffs.

    1. The video is horrifying. It shows that the police were completely uninterested in doing anything but shooting the man. Are they not trained to do anything else?

      Does anybody know why?
