Scary Stuff

I have fulfilled a long-standing dream of mine and decorated the house for Halloween:

Now, whenever I step outside, I get completely spooked by my own scarecrow, ghosts, and skeletons. I’m always very deep in thought, so when I notice them out of the corner of my eye, I freak out.

I guess the decorations are serving their purpose.

    1. When I was a kid, I really loved skeletons as toys. I made them myself from bits of wire. I loved them because they were loose-limbed and felt very tender. I had two: Sam and Jimmy.

I was such a weird kid.

  1. When I lived in the US semi-permanently, I lived on a corner that people tended to take at speed, which bothered me on Halloween because I’d worry about little people being hurt by fast moving vehicles …

So when Halloween came around, I had some thin orange plastic jack-o-lantern buckets full of cheap glow sticks that hung from trees on the property, a few metres away from the corner. The low-hanging jack-o-lantern buckets were labelled “ONE PER PERSON PLEASE” with phosphorescent paint markers so everyone would get the general idea.

I purchased emergency-grade glow sticks like these:

I haven’t a clue where I actually bought them, but it’s probably not from these people.

Of course, I purchased the 6 to 8 hour variety so they’d be bright and long-lasting, and in general these are non-toxic, even if they leak.

Close to sunset, I’d break one of the glow sticks for each high-hanging bucket and two for the low-hanging buckets full of glow sticks being given away. I’d also stick one of the white glow sticks on the corner’s stop sign so it would be well lit.

Usually the buckets would be empty by night’s end, and I’d see lots of little lights wandering around the neighbourhood.

I didn’t have to worry about little people getting hit by vehicles on my corner, and the parents would thank me over the next week for thinking ahead. Also, the neighbours thought the little wandering glow lights looked cool. 🙂

I’m not big on decorations, so if I’m going to bother with any at all, the decorations have to be useful …
