Unemployment in the US has dropped to 5.9%. This means the recession is completely over.
If your first reaction to this news is “yes but”, please start paying attention to your emotional well-being. Unlike the country, you are not on a good path.
Remember the drop in participation rate that is the other part of the arithmetic of unemployment rates before getting overly excited about the robustness of the economy. Also, part time non-benefit jobs are increasingly prevalent.

What is the point of that announcement?
The recession ended in 2009.
Nobody cares about numbers; everybody benchmarks against their personal economic situation and what they personally observe among their acquaintances.

– Let’s not generalize, especially when it’s obvious that I do care about numbers and am interested in how people I haven’t personally met are doing.

Unemployment of under 6% is absolutely the best a capitalist system can hope for. It’s an enormous achievement, enormous.
