Everybody is discussing Jonathan Chait’s essay. I read it and have only the following to say: the guy is intellectually impotent to a disturbing degree.
He has a really great collection of interesting anecdotes, yet he can’t even construct a semi-convincing narrative on their basis. His extreme laziness pushes him to string the anecdotes together with the help of the tired old “virtuous Republicans” versus “evil Democrats” binary. That’s been done a bizillion times already and it doesn’t get more exciting with every new repetition.
There is a definite problem with brainless idiots who feel perpetually sulky and aggrieved. This problem is not in any way linked to the aggrieved idiots’ pathetic excuses for political opinions. The world is more complex than the conservative / liberal division. And if Chait stopped sulking for two minutes, he might have figured that out.

You mock his essay as comical because your right-hand privilege makes you ignorant of the plight of left-handed people like me! There is no pain in the world more severe than being forced to use a right-handed scissor with your left hand.
This is why I demand scissor equality! All scissors in all offices and school rooms need to be either hand-neutral or the cronically underrepresented left-handed scissors need to fulfill at least quota of 50%.

Constructing ‘narratives’ is a hobby for duller minds and slower wits and I don’t think that was the point of the essay. As he notes, a growing number of victims of these politically correct witch hunts are liberals themselves.
As a conservative and a true intellectual, I am deeply enjoying the plight of leftist academic poseurs like yourself as you struggle to hold your decaying ideologies together. How do you do that in a politically correct way when your sub-intellectual peers can’t agree on what to censor and what offends them?
The political strategy for liberals that has been so successful for them was to ‘divide and conquer’. After years of aggressively pushing that stratagem they now find themselves so divided that they are now paralyzed. This exact same story played out here in Canada and the liberals were banished to the wastelands for their stupidity. I suspect America will respond the same way.
Hmmm…I seem to have hit on a major point myself! Consider: during Canada’s decades-long flirt with liberalism – the threat of western and Quebec separatism was always a simmering political issue. Now that true conservatives are running the nation it isn’t even on the radar. I note today at the state level…there are growing tensions. Montana and Texas are openly flipping the bird at Obama as the states that support him systematically fail and go bankrupt.
Interesting (and offensive, to some) times await. But I suppose you better delete this, right Clarissa? It’s OFFENSIVE dontchya know! LOL!

If the word “narrative” freaks you out so much, find its dictionary definition and relax. It’s not that scary.
After you do that and relax a bit, I allow you to rewrite your comment in a less hysterical tone. Maybe then it would make some sense.

It’s entertaining and instructive if you try to diagram the major movements without trying too hard to respect the author’s narrative (or lack of it):
