Happy Birthday to Me!

Basia ‘ s birthday was 2 days ago, and she asked everybody to avoid saying the word “Putin” around her on that day.

But I’m taking a different approach. On my birthday, I will speak about Ukraine as much as I want, and people will simply have to put up with it.

  1. Today is also the two hundred fortieth anniversary of silversmith Paul Revere’s famous nighttime ride, immortalized in verse by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. My birthday is still a week away, so I have no distractions from wishing you a wonderful one! Celebrate Revere also if you wish!

          1. “Back in high school, I used to know it by heart.”

Really? In English, or in translation? I memorized part of it in high school, but not the whole poem, as I recall. It was an assignment. I memorized the stanza beginning “Beneath in the churchyard lay the dead…”

            1. In English. We had a lot of memorization exercises to help us learn the language. I think it was very useful. We memorized both poetry and prose. There was quite a bit of Shakespeare we memorized, of course.

      1. Happy birthday to you too.

        BTW:

William Osler who was born and lived part of his youth in one of the houses in which I’ve lived (if you allow for the 1890 fire) married Grace Revere who was the great grand-daughter of Paul Revere so I guess that I should celebrate the 240th anniversary of his ride also.

  2. Btw, you (18 March) were born exactly in the middle between Albert Einstein (14 March) and Vladimir Lenin (22 April).

  3. Clarissa, a very happy birthday to you.

I kept looking at the cookie, and realized I’ve seen the colors of Ukraine in an entirely different context.
