Somebody on Facebook is asking why Ukraine is not “like Ireland.” I considered asking why the author of the query isn’t like a human being with a functioning brain but decided not to be cruel.

  1. How did they mean the question? Some parallels seem kind of obvious… a smaller country colonized by a larger, belligerent neighbor that despised its language and culture and did it’s best to eliminate them and did not hesitate to use famine to try to engineer social change and control (to be fair the British didn’t create the potato famine but they did as close to nothing to help as was possible).

It’s very far from a perfect analogy but there are a few parallels…..

    1. The question was, why do Ukrainians care about the Ukrainian language when the Irish don’t give a toss about Gaelic and just accepted English.

      1. The answer is because Ukrainians have more self-respect.
IME Irish people care about the language in the abstract but cared more about the material benefits that speaking English brought.

      2. Doesn’t sound as though they know much about Ireland either. There’s a strong emphasis on promoting Irish these days.
