A Dream

All night long, I watched a dream about going back to Kharkiv. I haven’t been back to Ukraine since emigrating 17 years ago, and the Kharkiv I saw in this dream was not even remotely like the real one.

I now wonder what it was that I was seeing in the dream and whether time had come for me to visit Ukraine.

  1. Ha, I’m going to India next week. It’s been more than two years since my last visit.

I think you should go. I know you’ve mentioned that you didn’t like it there, which is why you left, but this time you’d be going as a visitor/tourist, with some emotional distance to the place (and the security that you’ll be back to your home soon). That’s an entirely different experience, and one worth having.

  2. Isn’t it dangerous now with the war going on? What if you find yourself unable to fly back (in time) or in the zone of fighting, if Putin decides it’s time for another offensive?

    1. But just imagine the blogging opportunities this would provide: me, under siege, Putin ‘ s troops approaching!

The hits would keep rolling in.

    2. I went to Kharkiv and Sumy last fall, and my visit occurred without incident. The happenings seem to be confined mostly to Southeast Ukraine (of course, this was LAST year).

  3. I had a dream after having read Reddit too long where I imagined the people I was reading were all in an American Wal-Mart-sized pub, but that they were all dressed in gimp suits with Mickey Mouse faces and giant ears.

They sat completely emotionless until they agreed with you, at which point they’d nod their heads up and down and yell, “UPVOTES! MORE UPVOTES, BARMAN! WE NEED UPVOTES!”

The so-called “upvotes” would arrive in the form of lager, which the Mickey Mouse Redditors would consume nearly instantly, and then they would sit expressionless again until someone said something else they liked.

Sometimes when I wake up, I wake up to laughing my entire arse off.
