Well not to over simplify things but what can people possible expect from a lonely homeschooled teenager who had no one to interact with other than a pile of underage siblings? Teenagers need fellow teenagers to explore their sexuality with. Adolescence is a time of profound emotional and physical change. Something is bound to happen when a teenager is denied the company of other teenagers.
His behavior is not excusable under any circumstances of course. But I don’t think it’s surprising. Even if he wasn’t molested himself, he was clearly isolated to the point of abuse. This is yet another piece of evidence that homeschooling should be illegal. Ugh.

Also, I’m sure he was not offered any education on sex and had no knowledge on how to manage his sexual awakening.
I want to hope that all these kids received psychological counseling, at least, but I’m finding it hard to believe it.

I’m jaded. I didn’t think that was going on, but when I heard about it, I thought, “Of course. A family in which no girl can say no, for any reason, to a boy who is backed up by God and their parents is a great place for an older male to abuse the younger girls. Of course it happened, and of course the Duggars swept it under the rug.”

They did not do the boy any favors by keeping it all hushed up like this. And sending him off to a construction company to sublimate – I don’t want to be mean, so I’ll keep the jokes that come to mind to myself.

So, Jim Bob brings his molesting son to a child porn consumer for a stern talk about the indecency of molesting. The molesting son then becomes a spokesman for right-wing groups yelling about how gays are destroying the moral fabric of america.

Josh is the eldest and a guy. The Duggars had him four years after they married, before they decided that any contraception methods were a sin (Michelle was only 17 when they married). He had the extreme luxury of having his parents to himself for almost two years before his parents had twins. This means he has the best life prospects, based on things I’ve seen and all of the escape-from-FLDS memoirs I’ve read. The oldest boys are invested in the system and receive most of the benefits. The oldest girls are trapped into the childcare-baby-go-round, and the youngest girls are the most likely to run away.
I had a coworker who was the 12th of 15 children. Her parents were old school Catholics who actually followed the teaching on birth control. Her oldest brother who is the oldest child, went to college and is now a professor, she was a medical assistant and one of her younger brothers has Down syndrome. She would relate some story such as wearing plastic baggies in her hand me down shoes in the winter and then say it was all good because she developed “character” and claim that her two kids were “spoiled” because they had new shoes and toys.
