“Whenever I look at Richard, I’m filled with hatred,” my friend Jenna told me.
“But why?” I asked. “He’s a great guy, everybody loves him.”
“I can’t look at him without remembering that he sullied my beautiful daughter’s body! With sex! He had sex with her!”
“Jenna, your daughter is 36,” I said.
“Yeah, so what?”
“She is married to Richard.”
“And? What are you getting at?”
“They have a daughter.”
“OK, I’m seriously not getting your point here,” Jenna retorted irritably. “Whose side are you on?”

Married with Children would constantly make the joke that sleeping with a woman who had a child was like driving a wrecked car. But that was a joke about pregnancy changes, not hymens. (And the main character had 2 children and didn’t cheat ever, so…)

I actually was a small child when that was on. I don’t know why my parents thought it was ok for me to watch; it was so relentlessly cynical. Ed O’Neill was in that one and Modern Family.

I still can’t get over Modern Family. How can people watch that garbage? And mind you. I’m a huge fan of The Dr. Phil Show, so my standards for TV watching are quite low.

My response was along the same lines. I said, “Can you imagine how freaked out your daughter feels when she thinks about you having sex?”
That did make an impression. Especially since the current husband was several husbands after the daughter’s father. 🙂
