One group of acquaintances is convinced that Putin created ISIS. Another group of acquaintances believes that Obama created ISIS. Both groups look daggers at me when I suggest that maybe the members of ISIS created ISIS.

The vast majority of “progressives” in the US (ie people who think Robert E. Lee was more evil than Stalin) think that George Bush created Isis. I agree with you that ISIS created ISIS. But, for “progressives” all evil in the world must come from white men in the US south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Yes, it’s true, there’s also the “Bush created ISIS” narrative. I don’t know anybody personally who believes it but I’ve seen it online.
I dislike both Putin and Bush, to put it very mildly, but I’m still lucid enough to recognize that there are many bad things in the world they did not cause.

I was sure Israel created ISIS because of Middle East conflict distabilizing the entire Muslim world. Some European officials seem to agree with me.

There seem to be too many people in both the USA and Russia who think that everything that happens in the world is about their traditional animosities. This is Cold War thinking and highly dangerous. Let’s not go back there, please!

It is not just Americans and Russians. I have met for instance people from Iran and Pakistan that view everything through a Sunni/Shia conflict prism and put the center of world villany in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

It’s too late to hope that Cold War antagonism will not come back. Because it’s back. This should teach us that conflicts which are not resolved and are just allowed to fizzle out cam come back at any time.
