Trump is surging in the polls with 1 in 10 people actively supporting him.
Something is so deeply wrong with people that I don’t even know what to say. I have no idea what sort of severe neurological damage one has to sustain to begin taking Trump seriously.
What is it about republican voters in this country that the only way to rise in the party is either to be a fucking idiot (Bush, Trump, Perry, Bachman, Palin,) or to pretend to be one (Cruz)?

Doug Holtz Eakin was the director of CBO and used to command a lot of respect in policy circles back in the day. Now he’s a full-time troll who serves on a right-wing ‘think tank’. He’s not stupid but he cashed in.
Look at Cruz. By all accounts he’s a brilliant guy. Princeton graduate, clerked with a Supreme Court justice. But that is considered a liability now in the modern republican party so he panders to The Stupid. I’m sure there are a lot of smart conservatives that aren’t totally anti-intellectual but they don’t get any traction within their party — or worse — get automatically dismissed for being RINO (republican in name only).

There is a huge number of really scared, really ignorant people who feel completely lost in today’s reality. These politicians turn into a mirror image of these people to please them. A mirror image is the only thing that doesn’t freak them out.

You could do a find and replace for the minority Republican candidates. For Jindal, you’d replace “Princeton graduate and clerked with a Supreme Court justice” with “PMLE admit to Brown who double majored in biology and philosphy graduated early and was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford”. For Ben Carson, the replacement words would be
“director of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins who was the first surgeon to successfully separate twins conjoined at the head”
Trust that if they were actually on paper dumb (Perry, Palin) or standard pol book smart, they wouldn’t have the chance to be politicians who pretend to be deeply stupid to cater to stupid, often racist people. There’s something perverse about that which bothers me.

A good politician – like a good actor – doesn’t have any inner substance. They are empty shells filled with whatever the voters (viewers) want to see. And the more qualified a politician (actor) is, the greater is that inner void. And that’s not a bad thing at all.
So the only important thing here is why voters want to look at so much stupidity reflected in their politicians.

The thing is I can’t take any candidates very seriously. It’s like neither party really wants to win.
I supported Clinton in 2008 but I’m not sure about now. I think it’s cool that Sanders is doing so well but is he ready for prime time?
None of the republicans are even worthy of discussion… at least Trump will be good as comedic relief for a while.
