Feminism Is So Dead

So it turns out that there is another huge controversy on feminist websites. This time it has to do with a video by Rihanna. The video is either good because of its intersectionality or bad because of its fake intersectionality.

As you can imagine, there is no likelihood of me watching the video (7 minutes of Rihanna is what I will be subjected for in hell for my numerous sins). There is also no chance I will be able to untangle who intersectionalied whom and for what purpose in the video or in any discussions thereof. But here is an article that makes fun of the whole thing.

They took shoddy Marxism to a fashion shoot/Hannibal remake. It’s not un/feminist pro/anti-intersectionality whatever. It’s a copy of all of these sexy, violent photoshoots from the 90s. The whole thing is about her
former accountant. It’s a fantasy like 50 Shades of Gray is a fantasy, as in “Have you ever wanted to murder/injure someone who cheated you of money and is living off those ill gotten gains?” instead of “Have you ever wanted to be a Twilight-AU-billionaire’s S & M sex-slave?”

Feminism isn’t dead, a part of it had been diverted onto a noisy branch line to nowhere. Cards on the table, I’m an OLD feminist and obviously out of touch – I’m relieved to say I’ve never heard of intersectionality or sociopoliticosophical – what horrible words! I wouldn’t have a blue rinse even if I was paid, but on the other hand I would only watch Rhianna’s video if I was. It’s irrelevant, pop videos have been naff in the past and will continue to be. So what.

Feminisim for me should be about freedom for women all over the world to control their own fertility, freedom to love who they like, wear what they like and to go about where they like without fear of being harassed, without fear of being raped. It’s about every girl having the right to be educated. It is about campaigning against FGM, religious misogyny and the glass ceiling. It is about women being free, and being supportive and understanding towards other women who haven’t got it yet. It isn’t about accusing other women of being the wrong kind of feminist. But that’s just my feminism. I’m not accusing anybody.

  This is a beautiful manifesto. I subscribe to it wholeheartedly. It’s light years ahead of the intersectionality struggles. 🙂
