Greek Yogurt

You know what’s really great in the UK? Greek yogurt. It’s nothing like the kind we get here in the US. The British Greek yogurt is actually delicious.

It was first discovered by an American colleague at the conference who started approaching everybody with “Oh God, you have got to try this!” One by one people started trying it and turning into happily moaning creatures.

I have no idea why we can’t get any of the good Greek yogurt here. The only brands of Greek yogurt I’ve tasted in the US have this really harsh taste that I detest. And the British kind is creamy and gentle.

  1. Most “Greek” yogurt in the US comes from a cluster of farms located outside Albany, New York. It has about as much to do with Greece as sushi.

  2. The yoghurt in the UK isn’t always made in Greece, what makes it Greek yoghurt is the straining method used to remove some of the whey and make it thicker (and more delicious!).

I think in the US it is permitted to achieve the same effect with additives, sometimes?

  3. Glad you like real Greek yoghurt too. The easy availability of delightful things like this is one of the advantages of being in the EU. My favourite lovely, creamy Greek Yoghurt is Fage Total which is definitely made in Greece and available in all UK supermarkets. There is a low cal version too. ‘Greek’ yoghurt which is not made in Greece isn’t Greek yoghurt, in my opinion!

  4. I recommend plain and full fat (from whole milk, i.e., 4% milk fat) Chobani Greek yogurt (it comes in large packages with green, like this http://www.chobani.com/products/blended#plain ). It is really creamy, nothing like the low-fat watery crap, which most supermarkets carry.
Full fat is the way to go. I am really enjoying it.
I think you’d probably enjoy any other brand with full fat.

  5. I always thought that Greek yogurt was made with cream added to the milk (I may well be wrong about that though), which naturally made it taste really good. So I was surprised to see low- or non-fat versions here in the US – that’s not the point of Greek yogurt imho!
