The History of Aliens in Film

112 years of movies about space aliens have demonstrated how unimaginative and boring human beings are about this subject.

  1. ‘Plan 9 from outer space’ was pretty awesome, though.

With lines like this: ‘We are all interested in the future for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives’, how could you go wrong?

    1. Widely misunderstood as ‘bad’, Plan 9 is wildly entertaining it’s cheap and amateurish but very fun to watch.

The really bad movies are essentially unwatchable (worst ever in my experience: Monster a Go Go, wonderful title but there’s just nothing there, things sort of happen and then sort of stop).

  2. Getting back here, isn’t this one of the ideas in Solaris (both Lem’s novel and the Tarkovskij film).

“We don’t need other worlds, we need mirrors. We have no idea what to do with other worlds. The one we have is enough but we’re choking on it.”

People are interested in the unknown but lack the perceptions / concepts to imagine true aliens and so what we get are slightly tweaked versions of things we know.

I liked a minor idea in one book I read in which aliens were monitoring earth but could not be perceived by humans, they simply existed outside the sensory ranges of human beings (they had to be careful not to touch people because that would confuse them but nothing they did could be seen or heard because human vision and hearing are so limited (just as humans can’t hear most of the sounds that elephants make).

My quick translation of “Nie potrzeba nam innych światów. Potrzeba nam luster. Nie wiemy, co począć z innymi światami. Wystarczy ten jeden, a już się nim dławimy”

      • I didn’t watch the film or read the book. It’s so not my thing.
