A War on Condoms

The Russian government is considering a ban on importing condoms.

“This measure will help our country solve our demographic problems,” said the high-ranking official who announced the measure. “It’s time for our people to be more careful when choosing their partners. Condoms don’t have anything to do with health, anyway.”

    Condoms contribute almost as much as vaccines to public health! Now I’m wondering whether there are anti-vax-ers in the Duma.

      • Especially in Russia, where the rates of HIV and other STDs are soaring.

      • They are also banning a whole long list of medications, medical equipment, and especially many products that help the disabled and that are not manufactured in Russia. I haven’t heard anything about vaccines yet but I will be on the lookout.

    They know a lot of secondary infertility and fertility problems result from contracting STDs that are untreated and silent, right?

    I’m afraid to ask how many companies in Russia make condoms.

    1. Unfortunately, condoms manufactured in Russia are proverbially unreliable and uncomfortable. The contraceptive culture is extremely low. It’s hard enough to get people to use condoms as it is. Limiting availability will be disastrous.

      And yes, you are absolutely right, there is a plethora of evidence that a large percentage of infertility in Russia is caused precisely by early contraction of STDs. But do these clowns in the Duma care? No, because they believe in the possibility of abstinence as means of contraception.

      I can’t even begin to explain how completely ridiculous it is to expect abstinence in Russia, of all places. (Or in Ukraine.)
