Hubris in Foreign Affairs

There is nothing more dangerous in foreign affairs than the very American hubris of “people everywhere in the world are obligated to be the way I imagine them because I’m such a center of the universe.”

Trump’s foreign policy approach is grounded in this worldview. But Bernie Sanders’s is even more unabashedly like this.

  1. I’m not ready to give Trump credit for having a worldview. Bernie Sanders is a serious person who has committed his life to a sincerely held ideology, which he is capable of explaining and defending. Of course, any ideology that attempts to organize everything and everybody according to a limited set of rules is at least somewhat dangerous. When it comes to human beings, there is no one-size-fits-all.

    1. Bernie has no understanding of foreign affairs. None at all. His ignorance is out of this world. I can’t even come up with a comment by Trump that would be comparable to Bernie’s comment on Putin.

This is globalization, people. We can’t navel-gaze and pretend there’s a vacuum outside the US borders.

      1. Well, I don’t think either of them knows a thing about foreign affairs. I’m just thinking that, overall, Bernie is a serious person, and Donald is not. Donald’s only talent is probably salesmanship.
