Donald Trump in Sherwood Forest

Wall Street is growing increasingly terrified that Donald Trump — once viewed as an amusing summertime distraction — could actually win the Republican nomination for president.

Gosh, people will believe any silly feel-good garbage. Billionaires are terrified that one of their own will get into the White House. Donald Trump, the friend of the dispossessed. Has anyone heard of anything more stupid?

  1. Sherwood Forest? Have you been reading all “The Nation” magazine articles advocating a “Robin Hood Tax”? Yes, they actually call it that, in print, with a straight face, and expect people to take them seriously.

I can’t blame the billionaires for not wanting one of their own kind in the white house. I personally would never vote for a physician with no political experience to be running the country.

  2. There are lots of reasons they may not want him. For one, since he literally does not need their money, they have basically no control over his policy decisions. Also, there are plenty of very avowed liberal billionaires such as Steyer (huge liberal environmentalist) and Soros (wealthy financier, media matters and other very far left groups he funds) who billionaires certainly don’t want in charge. So whether donald would be good or not is up for debate, but its possible to believe he wouldn”t serve the interests of the billionaire class.

      1. His interests are different than many other wealthy individuals. He makes money from mainly two things: real estate and his “brand”. Changing the tax structure on most of the financial sector would be of minimal impact to his net worth.

Secondly, he truly has so much more money than he or anyone could ever spend, so I think he would be more concerned with whatever his main motivation for being a politician is. He claims it is mainly “making america great again”, which for him means restoring our economic competitiveness and to the dismay of the media a very strong anti-poor immigrant policy. Now if he really is focused on restoring economic circumstances for the vast majority of the population / middle class is up for you (and the voters to decide).

Ultimatley not a huge fan of him (although i do favor a wealthy businessman as president because i think they are the only one not wed to the system – they don’t need other wealthy people’s money. This is obviously not a fail safe 100% perfect factor, but is a significant net positive). I just don’t think he is nearly as cozy with other billionaires as you think.

It is a huge mistake to believe that for rich people there is such thing as “too much money” or even “enough money.”

“He claims it is mainly “making america great again”, which for him means restoring our economic competitiveness and to the dismay of the media a very strong anti-poor immigrant policy.”

Are you his mind reader? 🙂 I will never understand the readiness with which some people convince themselves that there are rich folks who truly have their interests in mind. These are all lies, Trump is lying to you, and you are eating it up. All he wants is more money. All that any billionaire wants is more money. That’s not a bad thing per se, it’s just reality.

“I just don’t think he is nearly as cozy with other billionaires as you think.”

As any rational human being, he will defend his own interests. And his own interests are inescapable those of billionaires. Of whom he is one. They don’t have to pay them to protect their interests because they all have the same interests. They are getting a puppet for free without having to compete for his attention. That’s a sweet, sweet deal.

    1. I must be dreaming. Did you just honestly compare Trump to FDR???

Now anything is possible, I guess. 🙂

P.S. I recommend my most recent post for precedent that really counts. This is what awaits us all if we let a blabby, self-important, uneducated billionaire with a pea-brained trophy wife into the White House.

Yes, but only in the sense that they have/had in common the willingness to violate their own class interests. I don’t know what your opinion of FDR is.

I have also compared Trump to Hitler. He is charismatic to the point of being hypnotic and assures his followers that they would have everything they want but for a class of people who are scapegoats who he promises to neutralize.

    1. I still think it makes more sense to go to the precedents that are chronologically and culturally closer to us. Why wonder what Trump will be like if the state of Illinois has already elected a mini-Trump and is now reaping the fruits of that decision?

    1. Yeah, WWII wasn’t that long ago. Hitler is probably the best recent political comparison to Trump, as far as illustrating the hypnotic appeal of a bombastic demagogue to an incredible number of clueless voters. (Pat Buchanan tried in 2000 as the Reform Party candidate, but failed miserably.)
