A Scholar ‘ s Tragic, Shameful Secret

And since we are on the subject of deeply obnoxious inmaturity:

I am a junior scholar with a secret: I enjoy Masterpiece Theatre’s British period drama Downton Abbey. Actually, “enjoy” is quite the understatement. And this is a very, very difficult thing for me to admit publicly. . . As an academic, I find myself apologizing, or overexplaining, to other scholars my interest in this show should the topic arise.

. . In conversations, I find myself explaining that I am quite “well aware of the racial and classist problematics,” as a way of introducing, framing and apologizing for my love of the show.

Jesus, lady, unclench. Nobody gives a rat’s ass what you do or don’t watch. The world is not breathlessly awaiting updates on your entertainment choices. If you are very lucky, there are a few relatives and friends who might be nice enough to pay attention to which TV shows you watch. Everybody else is too busy living their life to notice.

And the references to “classist problematics” in regard to a TV show make you sound like a twerp of massive proportions.

This is what people who insist at 15 that their Daddy take them to a playground amidst plentiful conversation grow up to be like.

These chirpy, vapid drama queens give a bad name to all academics.

  1. LOL, imagine if they said that around heavy metal people. “This music is deeply problematic because it depicts white male working class machismo, there are a lot of songs about sex with women, and the Medieval ages theme in some songs might be offensive to people of color because of the lack of people of color in Medieval fantasy, but I like it anyway”. Anyone who said that around metalheads at a metal concert would get their ass kicked in the pit 😁.

  2. In all seriousness, these people are insufferable. Pretty much all entertainment has its issues and trying to find something that doesn’t offend someone is almost impossible. A lot of art is made by crappy people and as long as they aren’t serial killers, rapists or child molesters I’ll watch/listen/or read. I’m on a Beatles kick right now and they did drugs, had sex with groupies, and were stoned most of the time towards the end, but they had great music and I’m not going to stop listening to them just because they weren’t perfect people

      1. I agree, I loved watching Beavis and Butthead as a teenager and that is the dumbest show ever. I just liked laughing at those two idiots and I was entertained for half an hour, no harm no foul. That goes for people who like popular junk (to me) like Taylor Swift or reality shows, if it makes people hap, then what’s the problem?

  3. I started reading this article thinking there was going to be some shameful reveal about studying prostitutes before becoming one herself. But nope. Downton Abbey? Please… The only shameful thing about watching Downton Abbey is that the person continued to watch it after all the interesting people were killed off. 😉 “Jesus, lady, unclench” is right!!
