Kissinger’s New Article

I just read Kissinger’s article in today’s WSJ, and I’m very unimpressed. Just as we have finally buried the silly idea that Reagan destroyed the USSR, Kissinger comes up with an outlandish suggestion that Nixon actually caused it to break up by initiating negotiations with China. That’s a very bizarre idea.

Then he shows that his understanding of what Putin is doing in Syria is extremely shallow. I understand that the fellow is in his nineties but I thought he ar least managed to follow the trajectory of the USSR.

In all honesty, my plumber offers a more nuanced analysis of foreign affairs than this article.

  1. Kissinger is trying to buff his own reputation and remind everyone he is still alive (I forgot) by suggesting the China negotiations had anything to do with the USSR breakup in a WSJ editorial. His entire raison d’etre behind his realpolitik was to win the Cold War. If he can’t claim he contributed to that, many of his actions have little point.
I’m not sure Niall Ferguson’s recent biography did much to burnish his reputation. If he’s out of the public eye for too long, people start questioning why he has a Nobel Peace Prize and start listening to people who think he should be arrested for war crime.

    1. I haven’t read the biography yet and I’m very ignorant about Kissinger for now but this article is deeply disappointing. I expected at least a better grasp on the past if not the present.
