Who Is the Real Authority in Canada?

At a voting poll in Canada, a letter from the Canadian government doesn’t suffice as proof of address. A bill from a private company, on the other hand, does.

  1. Under the new voting fraud act, you need a photo ID. All provinces and the feds issue them. You need photo ID to get drunk in Canada, so for all of the folks who claim they dont have photo ID, but are drunk 13 hours a day, this seems a bit disingenuous. However, with the new court ruling, you can wear a potato sack or batman mask and they cant check your face, only your ID.

  2. Here in Australia we don’t show ID at all we just give our name and address to get checked off. But then we have compulsory voting.

    1. I didn’t know Australia had mandatory voting! I think that’s a wonderful thing. I wish we had that in the United States.

      1. Why?? Reluctant voters forced to go to the polls against their will are very likely to rebel by voting for some Tea Party candidate here in the US. These are the low information voters who don’t tend to vote smart.

        1. I actually think compulsory voting would help the left. Young people often skip voting but they swing left when the rubber hits the road. African American voters often skip the polls but they tend to support Democratic candidates. The only reliable voting groups in this country are the elderly and the wealthy– both groups whom swing right. I also think it’s a shame that about 20% of the American population decides on one of the most powerful positions in the world.

Along these lines, compulsory voting, I imagine, would have to make voting easier for large swathes of the population. For many people in this country, voting is difficult. In many states (such as my own), polling places are often difficult to get to for those without a car and have hours that are difficult for people who work nonstandard hours. In addition, voter registration is a crock and affects people who move a lot (like college students). And I think compulsory voting would probably eliminate that stupid practice.

Compulsory voting would never happen in this country though. So it’s just a dream for me. 🙂

          1. Well, since the elderly and the wealthy are the smartest and best informed groups in this country, why shouldn’t we be doing most of the voting? 🙂 🙂

          2. Well North Korea and Cuba have compulsory voting too and manage to get near 100% turn over and vote for the left. The same thing in the former USSR. But, this constant reliance upon force by the left to achieve political power is part of the problem not a solution to it.

            1. During the Stalin era, the secret police people were stationed on every voting poll to take down the names of people who didn’t show up to vote before 11 am (yes, am, not pm). It was considered a sign of disaffection towards the regime if you didn’t show up at 6 or 7 am, eager to vote.
