In Search of Freedom

This is Maria Ángeles,  one of 18 women who have been arrested so far in Spain on their way to joining ISIS. At the age of 22, Maria Ángeles lived with her mother and two siblings, worked at a hotel, listened to heavy metal, and was into the Goth style of clothing.

Then she met 3 guys from ISIS online, and they promised her that if she put on a niqab and joined them in ISIS, she’d gain complete freedom and the best life a woman could have, which is only offered by Sharia to good, moral wives and no other kind of woman. So Maria Ángeles found a niqab, hurried to the airport, and was apprehended waiting for an airplane with a Spanish-language Koran in her hand. Obviously, Maria Ángeles does not speak Arabic and knows nothing about the Koran or Islam but the fairy-tales she was told by her online ISIS buddies.

At this time, it has been confirmed that at least 50 European women have successfully reached ISIS and installed themselves there in a position of wives / sex slaves. One can only hope that they did find the “complete frredom” they were so desperate to encounter.

One may find complete freedom only after death, but I doubt you meant that. 🙂

At first, I thought “complete freedom” was “complete freedom to be an amoeba,” iow deciding nothing about one’s life.

Now I wonder whether they were fed fairy-tales about fighting infidels OR were thrilled to hear about doing the womenly version of it by being in a modesty squad.

What does make people join ISIS, in your eyes?

    1. I guess they are bored with their easy, comfortable lives, want excitement, adventure, to feel special and important. To me, these people are aliens from another planet because at 22 I was trying to stay afloat in a new country, worrying about making ends meet, trying to become a university student in a new country. Making a fool of myself by prancing around in a niqab wasn’t on my radar.

      1. Well, you had REAL things to worry about and occupy your time, so you didn’t need to concern yourself with trying to find some meaning in your life.

  2. My assumption is that she wanted freedom from having choices and options, that is, an excuse for not doing very much of anything. The idea that is would hurt mom (where’s dad? is that a clue?|) was icing on the cake.

I doubt she thought this consciously because if she could perceive such goals she wouldn’t have them.

  3. Here’s a question….hasn’t she paid attention to the news–whether on TV, or in print, or certainly online? Didn’t she know or at least hear about how awful ISIS was and how badly women are treated in certain parts of the Middle East?

    1. The women who are treated badly are the infidel ones. But the pitch ISIS makes to thee little fools is that if they convert to the only correct faith, they will be treated like a moral authority and be the most respected women in the world.
