A Favorite Movie

So you know how I hate movies, right? There is one movie, though, that I can watch time and again and again and again and never tire of it.

The movie is Groundhog Day.

It’s no masterpiece but I LOVE the rigid, repetitive structure. The sound of that song that plays over the radio every time the clock hits 6 am is hypnotic because it’s always the same.

This is the reason I love Law & Order, too. The structure is very predictable, and I dig that.

No, I haven’t had a lot of stability in my life.

  1. If you want to watch a TOTALLY predictable, repetitive movie, go see Andy Warhol’s silent 1964 film “Empire.” It’s eight hours and five minutes long, and it shows nothing at all except continuous slow motion footage of the Empire State Building in New York City.

You can take all the restroom breaks you want, or even a nap in your theater seat, and you won’t miss any of the plot. 🙂

Well, if you can find a way to do that on the two Dish Network channels that keeping running the original “Law & Order” series (the SUNDANCE channel and the WE channel), you’ll have my eternal gratitude. They only rerun about a third of the twenty years’ worth of shows, over and over — and I’ve seen ALL of this set of goddamn reruns by now!!!

          1. Yes, they lack the neat division into the investigation and court trial parts that makes the original so great. But they still have a lot of attractive features.
