  1. I do agree that comparing Israelis to Nazis is a sign of antisemitism. Especially love when Germans are the ones to say that and/or boycott my “immoral” country.

However, neither thinking Jews have recognizable features nor criticizing Israel are signs, imo.

Which statements do you (dis)agree with?

The ‘and/or’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. Comparing Israeli actions to nazism and boycotting Israeli products are worlds apart.

And umm, what recognizable features do Jews have? Are you insane?

I thought “recognizable features” meant “looks.” I googled and found a question:

“What are some easily recognizable facial features that identify a person as being from a specific racial background?”

So I am probably right and the expression can refer to looks.

My Jewish relatives do look different from Russians or Germans. When we lived in Ukraine, people around easily identified them as Jews.

        1. I find it very strange that I have to tell this to somebody who lives in Israel, but there are Jews who are white, Jews who are black, Jews who are red – haired, blond, dark-haired, tall, short, big noses, tiny noses, blue eyes, brown eyes, green eyes, etc. How you make an average -looking one out of them is a mystery.

    2. Really? Comments about “Jewish noses” are not anti-Semitic?

Behind the desire to believe in “recognizable features” lies the need to make certain that one will not by accident have undesired contact with the menacing, repugnant entity. This is the same thing that lurkes behind the belief that one can “spot” gayness.

        Who said that?

I do not disagree with you regarding why many people may want to believe in those Jewish features, but Jews do have them. Every nationality has them to some degree, not only Jews. I can differentiate between Slavic looks and Jewish looks, for instance. Of course, there are people with not typical looks, but take an average looking Russian and an average looking Jew and the difference is visible.

        1. I can’t copy in this app but the comment about “average looking Russians and average looking Jews” is just bizarre. Are you not noticing how weird this sounds?

        2. Oh, this is gonna be good.

El, can you please elaborate on the physical features of the ‘average looking jew’?

“Are you not noticing how weird this sounds?”

If only this vile person had any self-awareness. Years of posting here, years of Clarissa patiently correcting her, explaining basic shit to her, all for naught.

Still as clueless as day fucking one.

            1. Funny story, I met my brother-in-law (very close cousin’s husband) for the first time a few years ago, when I flew back to India for a wedding. He’s a witless moron, and has this habit of trying to put people down and failing miserably. He had heard from my family that I’m this science guy, studying in the US, which totally boiled his piss because he’s a big believer in astrology and hand-reading.

The very first interaction with him:

Me: “Hi, I’m Stringer, so nice to have finally met you.”
              Him: “You look Jewish.”
              Me: “OK.”

              1. Yes, studying science made you Jewish. 🙂 🙂

All my life I hear I “look Russian” and I have no idea what it means especially since I’m not Russian.

  2. I lived in Israel for a long time and have not seen many blue-eyed and blond-haired Jews around. Usually, when somebody has such looks, it’s a sign of non-Jewish relatives, like in my and your cases.

As for average looks, I thought about FSU Jews. You have yourself written:

So these are the people who were given to us in the nineties as the all-powerful billionaires who now had all the money and the power of the former Soviet Union. And they all have one thing in common. It might not be obvious to an American eye that is used to seeing a huge ethnic and racial variety on a daily basis. It is immediately obvious to any Soviet person, though, that these guys are Jews. (These are not the only billionaires of the 90ies, of course. There are a few more, and most of them are also Jewish.)

    1. Soviet Jews are only a small proportion of the world’s Jews. Even then, a great number of them happens to be red – haired and freckled. It’s interesting that you never met any but they definitely do exist. There are tons of jokes about the red curly Jewish hair.

  3. Strange debate… Of course Jews can come in all shapes and sizes. 🙂 But there are several types that are definitely Jewish… What’s wrong with mentioning that? I do not think any worse or better of anybody for being recognizably Jewish…
And there is nothing specific about Jews in this context. I may mistake a Russian for a Pole, but I usually can distinguish between a Slavic person and Anglo-Saxon one. Just by their appearance.

    1. I can’t recognize anybody, to be honest. The only way for me to know anything about people is if they tell me.

As for Jews, how can you possibly know that it’s a Jew and not another Semitic person?

    2. This made me remember the neighbor we had back in Ukraine who was shocked to hear my mother was not Jewish. “I don’t get this!” she exclaimed. “If you aren’t, then who is Jewish in your family?” And yes, my mother had pitch-black hair of a very Jewish texture, very dark eyes, a noticeable nose.

        1. Of course. But they don’t exist in all Jews or only in Jews.

I, for instance, didn’t inherit the color but I did inherit the texture. And now I have this huge yellow Jewfro I don’t know how to deal with.

Also, all the Jews in the family are blue-eyed. And the Slavs are dark-eyed.

        2. “So such things do exist?”

Yes, but it makes you a “vile person” for saying so. (See certain comments above.) 🙂

  4. —As for Jews, how can you possibly know that it’s a Jew and not another Semitic person?

Very possible that I can’t know that. But if I truly cannot distinguish a Jew from an Arab, then I am equally likely to mistake a Jew for an Arab and vice versa. And this makes me a mistaken person, not an anti-Semite.
