Russian Rehab

N and I discovered a YouTube channel by yet another Russian immigrant in Canada. And he also turned out to be a very nice, kind fellow who, shockingly, cares about the rights of the disabled and doesn’t like people to get hurt. He told a story of a little disabled boy who was bullied and, in an incredible turn of events, he didn’t find the story funny. Instead, he felt bad for the boy!

This other Russian Canadian on YouTube shared the story of how he was about to beat his daughter, but then he realized that he was now in Canada and maybe it makes sense to do things differently. And he decided not to beat her!

It’s like if you take Russians out of Russia and keep them away for a while, they learn how to be completely normal people.

If you think I’m unfairly tough on Russians, let me tell you that just in the last couple of weeks, the following stories from Russia made a big impression on me. I’ll put them under the fold because the stories are harsh.

One story is about two Russian guys in the Arctic. They had a polar bear visit their station with her cub, foraging for food scraps. They lured her in and put explosives in the food. The polar bear and the cub blew up and the men filmed their suffering to put in on YouTube because ha ha, that’s totally funny.

The second story is about another group of Russian fellows who sawed off half of a sea lion’s face while it was alive and put the video on YouTube because ha, ha, that’s hilarious.

So you can imagine why I find it shocking that a guy from this culture can feel bad for a bullied boy.

P.S. Of course, it’s not like any of us from the FSU are better. It’s a shared characteristic. The cruelty people inflict on each other in their daily lives is off the charts.

    1. Our history has been very unforgiving. Now people are lashing out against the world.

I remember how people would accidentally get pushed on the bus and would react by starting to pummel each other viciously.

  1. My god. Wish I hadn’t clicked on this post.

Maybe someone can correct me and I hope I’m completely wrong about this, but I’ve read that a lot of people in China believe the more the animal suffers, the tastier its meat (presumably from the adrenaline that is released). So, they inflict all kinds of torture on animals before slaughtering them.

    Fuck this planet.
