Mirror

Unlike many people, I don’t identify with Hillary. Her personality is the exact opposite of mine, and her life is incomprehensible to me.

I identify with Bernie. I’m angry, irritable, passionate, idealistic like Bernie. I’m known for an obsessive hatred of Goldman Sachs, and I tend to be a little one-note in my interests.

However, I’d never base my support of a candidate on their similarity to myself. I mean, I like me but not to the point of needing to see a reflection of myself everywhere I turn. The world doesn’t need to be my mirror to make me feel more real.

  1. I find that people on both sides of the Hillary divide tend to invest way too much in her for my tastes. She’s never just a candidate but the incarnation of whatever they want/fear/hate/aspire to. Sometimes a pantsuited politician is just a pantsuited politician I want to yell at them she’s not your exwife or mommy or whatever other female figure haunts your psyche….

I supported her in 2008 because I thought she was liable to do the best job out of a weak field. I’m less enthusiastic now just because of age but the field (esp on the dems side) is maybe even weaker (don’t much get the point of Bernie beyond the GS hate) while the repubs are in the middle of a full psychotic break (I don’t want him to win the general but if Trump can free the party from the neocons and evangelicals I’ll be happy with him as the nominee and hope that some saner voices can emerge from the wreckage).

  2. You have a fairly rare personality type, so asking a politician to adopt something like it as a persona is pointless. :/

If I relied on politicians for mirrors, I’d be looking into fun house carnival ones. Needing this is actually a sign of deep insecurity. I’m not talking about commonalities of background or biography. It’s like all of these people are voting for their own ids on display, and it’s very disturbing to me to see and for that to be treated as normal.
