Feeling Kindly Towards Trump

Twice this week I felt kindly towards Trump. Yes, me. Yes, towards Trump.

The first time was when I saw snippets of his interview with Chris Matthews. Matthews was so obnoxious, condescending, loud and rude that Trump looked downright presidential by his side. The reporter was interrupting and drowning Trump out with his smug, narcissistic bleating that was making the program impossible to watch. Many of us have had an experience of an arrogant bastard yelling over us, so all one can do when witnessing such a scene is identify with the quieter fellow. And Trump was, uncharacteristically, the quieter, more modest fellow in that interview.

I’ve got to say, I never thought anybody could make me feel kindly towards a man who was asking for punishment for women who want to control their own reproduction at the moment when he was articulating that barbaric idea but this Matthews creature managed to accomplish that feat.

Then this morning I saw on  MSNBC Trump being interviewed by a female reporter who asked him about a radio show in Wisconsin where Trump was treated with great hostility.

“I’m glad I went on the show,” Trump said. “Sometimes you’ve got to go into hostile territory.”

“Oh, so Wisconsin is hostile territory to you?” exclaimed the reporter triumphantly, and Trump walked off in disgust that, I’m sure, many of the viewers shared.

Many of us have had the experience of somebody turning our words around to make us sound horrible and feel like idiots. In the moment when you see this done to somebody else, it’s hard not to feel solidarity with that person.

I honestly wish that these reporters were corrupt and were taking bribes from Trump to make him look more relatable to voters. But I’m sure they aren’t. They actually are that unprofessional.
