Binoculars are stupid. They don’t magnify anything. They just bring things closer. Which is useless to me in my task of seeing the giant bird who lives in the backyard.
Optics was the subject I did the worst in in high school. Closely followed by astronomy which was somehow weirdly related to optics.
So you should be able to see the bird in much greater detail if your binoculars are properly focused.
I once worried that a hawk was circling around in the sky eying my cat in the backyard. When I finally looked at the “hawk” through my binoculars, it turned out to be a hawk-patterned paper kite.

Does your college offer any field biology classes? If so, perhaps that colleague can be of some assistance. He/she might be thrilled to have someone to share their expertise with.

So I’m not using them right? Oh, that’s good news. I thought this was hopeless.

And in other news, it appears that high schools in Ukraine have classes in “Optics” much to the puzzlement of the rest of the world….

Yes, and mind you, this was a school with a reduced science load because we had a concentration in English.
We learned all kind of arcane material and failed to learn basic things like capitals of the world’s largest countries.
