Drama Queens Unlimited

Love Americans but, God, will they ever tone down the drama-queenishness*? See this, for example:

It has struck me for some time that the Clinton and Sanders supporters are not only disagreeing; we’re speaking different languages. We’re approaching the campaign with entirely different sets of assumptions and values. For this reason, it has been impossible to communicate with each other.

Yes, the horror, the horror! The end of the world is looming on the horizon. In the meanwhile, here on my blog not only have Bernie’s and Hillary’s supporters been coexisting happily and communicating productively, but even Trump’s and Rubio’s fans have felt fine around the blog (no Ted Cruz people here, though. Seriously, are they allowed to use the Internet?).

I have set a great example by donating both to Bernie’s and Hillary’s campaign and driving around with a Sanders sticker while supporting Hillary. And I’ve done all that while speaking not a metaphoric but an actual different language and managing to go through life without screeching stupidly about how immoral everybody is compared to me.

I seriously detest smug, superior moralizers like the one at the link. Bernie so deserves better quality supporters than this type of vapid creature.

* Not all Americans are self-congratulating drama queens. Only the ones who have had very easy lives. They try to spice up their problem – free existence with invented problems.

  1. Well, I think in the end that this is because of not taking things so personally. There are in fact some Hillary supporters who ascribe very strongly either to her positions and/or to the lesser evil theory. For them it is absolute heresy and betrayal not to vote for whoever the most mainstream Democrat is. They might be right in their belief that only a more conservative Democrat can win or will be allowed to win, but it is a very pessimistic attitude. I think there is an actual rift between those who say “accept it — this is the best you can do” and those who want to be more hopeful. That is why the Hillary supporters I get along with are those who are actually for Hillary, not those who advocate voting for her as part of grim duty.

  2. Yeah i think your insight about those who have had pretty easy lives is spot on. If you haven’t faced real adversity, then its easy to think anything is a big struggle and to create struggles.

Also, the internet has a tendency of amplifying extremist views and rants… so its like why do kids that parents reward “acting out” keep throwing temper tantrums… because it benefits them! Sort of like that “millenial” that just got 45 million views for shitting on all of us “other” millenials that aren’t as amazing as her… sigh.

Serenity prayer is the answer.. and in this case can’t control the drama queens and attention seekers so just calmly explain why they are wrong / irrational (as you did and as I did here an then ignore and move on!)

  3. Eh.
That post is several thousand words to say “Bernie voters value different things than Hillary voters” without any real insight.

It’s a little patronizing to say “Hillary voters are more invested in the status quo” without examining all of the reasons that might be. Not everyone is worried about points on their mortgage. Likewise, it’s patronizing to go about pragmatism when one person’s pragmatic calculus is another’s major setback. These are major blindspots I see in think pieces about Sanders v. Clinton voters and about coalitions.

“I vote for [x] because I may never have this opportunity again and if not now, then when?” they say, oblivious to the other person saying the exact same thing.

    1. I really hate it when people make it about morality. Like they are suddenly morally superior because of their voting choice. Gosh, it’s not like you founded an orphanage.

      1. Exactly. It does make my blood boil when I hear (or read) someone say, “I vote based on my conscience!” after stating that they will not vote for “the lesser of two evils”. To me that just screams “moral superiority”.

These are the same people who usually pipe up about how they won’t mind if everything fell apart because, you know, we would just “rebuild”. Notice how they ignore the lives that would be lost in the chaos.
