News Sources

So people actually get news from Facebook? Strangely, my Facebook never even tried offering me any news aside from some gossip articles about starlets I don’t even know. But I haven’t gotten a single election-related suggestion or anything political at all. Is it true, as the NY TIMES says, that Facebook is the world’s most influential news source?

  1. Right now my facebook feed has stuff on Eurovision, Zimmerman trying to auction off the gun he used to kill Martin, Putin’s support of Trump, and in Russian Andropov’s diary entries about Stalin being insane.

  2. I don ‘t know if it’s true…..but I get lots of election-related news in my feed. I go to other sources of course. But FB does have election-related headlines.

  3. I get a fair amount of my news (though not all of it) by scrolling through what my online friends have posted on Facebook (not the facebook algorithms – it’s the people I’m connected to). I know this is a very selective set of news stories, but in general, it helps me to filter more of the noise. I also have other news sources, though, so it isn’t the only one. It definitely does help, though.

  4. If you have friends who post news stories, and you react to them, you will get more. Most of my FB feed is news, from reputable sources.

  5. I see tons of news on Facebook, but when something has happened that I already know about I first go to the NYT website, and then, if there’s nothing there, I go to Twitter.

  6. Perhaps it’s because the NYT reporters get all their news from Facebook. 🙂 Wouldn’t surprise me, given the quality of their reporting.
