Dems Sit In

Hey, I missed something cool, it seems! Democrats are sitting in to defend something they believe in. A bunch of old, crusty and cynical folks decided not to be old and crusty for a moment. This is great!

I credit Bernie for rejuvenating the party and showing these people that it’s possible not to be an irrelevant old fart.

  1. I’m not even sure if I support the laws they’re skiing a sit in about, but it’s inspiring to see.

Yes, but did they really have to regress back to the level of college children? They remind me of the privileged, idiotic student protesters who think they’re demonstrating their brilliance and bravery by occupying the dean’s office.

    1. I will admit that they’re accomplishing at least as much sitting on the floor as they usually accomplish sitting in their assigned seats.

I don’t envy anybody who still has to pretend they’re working — being there, done that, happy to be retired and totally useless. πŸ™‚

  3. They’re supporting such a bad law. Shame on them.

Now only if they stage a sit in for actual progressive legislation. Naw, where’s the glory in that?

    1. I’m not sure yet what the law actually is because something keeps distracting me. But let’s hope it’s just the beginning. Until now, the Dems were all ” We can’t get anything passes unless we have a super super majority, and even then we can pass nothing.” I’m glad to see them with fire under their mossy asses.

      1. The law proposed would greatly strengthen the existing no-fly and terrorist watchlists which are already serious violations of civil rights to strip everybody on them (almost all Muslims) of their Second Amendment Rights without any due process.

        1. These are not violations at all because flying on an airplane is entirely non-essential. And the idea that the founders aimed for terrorists to buy bazookas and drag them onto airplanes is bizarre.

          1. If I wrote the legislation, I’d stop men with domestic violence convictions or who currently are on trial for domestic violence from getting guns.

Of course flying on an airplane is non essential for people who aren’t immigrants or children of immigrants and don’t have far flung family and spend all of their lives in the same small little town forever. Driving isn’t strictly essential either, but I don’t see people clamoring to strip gun rights from people who have DUIs.

And the idea that the founders aimed for terrorists to buy bazookas and drag them onto airplanes is bizarre.

Never mind the founders. The terrorist watch list should have stopped people from getting weaponry a long time ago if it was to make any damn sense. As it is, not being able to fly on a plane would be much worse for my life than not being able to carry semiautomatics around.

Yes. Me too. Clarissa brought this up briefly earlier. But there is a very significant connection between domestic violence and mass shootings.

              1. I think there’s already a law against this. The problem is that many people aren’t convicted. Also you can often but guns without a background check at gun shows or on the internet.

            2. Preventing people who are under investigation for terrorist connections from buying guns and flying airplanes sounds entirely reasonable. Especially given that they can still drive and buy knives and gasoline.

      1. Expansion of terror watch list — they can decide you are a “potential terrorist” for various murky reasons and limit your constitutional rights

Mind you I would seriously revise the 2d amendment, it is utterly anachronistic at best and it is rooted in need for slave patrols / defense against Native Americans (offense against them) but notice how they have taken a homophobic attack by US born person and parlayed it into fear of Muslim terror

Hmmm…I’m going to have to disagree with you on this. The sit-in was led by John Lewis, who has had experience with sit-ins and proper civil disobedience with the goal of change in mind. He was doing this as a teenager during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s and as a Representative in Congress.

Of course, he is also a supporter of Hillary Clinton, and for that he was attacked by some of the more hardcore Sanders supporters.

I wouldn’t give Bernie credit for this at all. That’s just my view.
