I Don’t Get Men

A group of men – younger than me, probably, but not by much – were making an infernal ruckus at the hotel until the wee hours. They stood in the hallway, laughing and discussing loudly, banged doors, called out to each other, etc. I came out of the room to tell them they were vile pieces of disgusting trash and they subsided for a while. Then they started on again and security had to be called.

I could understand how all this could be an exciting way to pass time for a group of teenagers. But adult men? Montréal has a vibrant bar scene, we are right next to the red lights district, the Gay Village is close by. And they choose to spend time roaming the hotel hallway?

  1. It’s not just a guy thing. Teens of both genders do that. The hotel is a controlled environment (minimize risk versus the outside area), and some people are just rude/thoughtless. “The idiots ye will always have among you.” That should have been a passage in some religious scripture.

  2. Was there a wedding in the hotel? (Probably not, it’s the middle of the week). Actually when is last call at the bars and nightclubs in Montréal?

Hopefully the baby slept through the noise.

  3. In my experience, it’s men plus alcohol that triggers this sort of behaviour. Was there a conference in the hotel? After hours conference attendees can get a bit wild.

    1. Definitely alcohol i will agree. only few times i have ever interacted with cops besides traffic stops was because a few drunk women couldn’t keep themselves under control. But alcohol and most men do seem in general society to be a bigger issue. Basically control your alcohol people, nothing more pathetic than a post college age person who gets drunk and imposes their shitty behaviors on others, regardless of gender

My best guess. They’re a little starved for homosociality in their daily lives and bieng out of town gives them an excuse for something like male-bonding time (or the middle aged equivalent) and the hotel seemed like a better place for that than a bar (too many women and competition that produces) red light district (ditto) or gay district (wrong type of homosociality).

Some other part of the hotel might have been better overall but they didn’t want to leave for fear the magic moment would pass….
