Looks like post-nation-state political fluidity to me. With government disinvesting from so many of its traditional functions there’s not much in the way of real issues to talk about.
So politics becomes degraded into crude symbolism and slogans as voters aren’t voting for someone to actually do anything – they’re voting for avatars of their identity (even more so than usual).
He invokes some issues (far removed from anything a governor is supposed to be concerned with) doesn’t actually say anything and provides a powerful visual image set for a public that’s always mentally preparing (though never prepared) for war.
And really, seeing this in phallic terms is beneath you – it’s like analyses of Melania’s and Hillary’s white dresses (one is apparently racist dog-whistling and the other a symbol of hope!)

Great analysis. 😃 You are absolutely right, politicians become clowns because all they can really do is entertain. And only the people who cling to the old-fashioned ways of doing things mind. Like me.
