Zizek on Toilet Wars

Zizek decided to write about the real meaning of the toilet wars, and, as usual, did brilliantly.

People are desperate to join the fluid elites and invent increasingly outlandish ways of signaling their readiness to be fluid. But the only real point of fluidity is to sweep away all opposition to the free movement of capital.

The really funny thing is how people keep thinking they are being hugely subversive and progressive when all they are doing is advancing the goals of fluid capital.

I’m reminded of one of the best things ever by the brilliant cartoonis Peter Bagge – The hipster girl desperate to show how BAD! she is.

(be sure to use the enlarge function to look at the book and video titles – an encylopedic compendium of the edgiest stuff circa 1990, including groundbreaking titles like Modern Primitives and Apocalypse Culture though I don’t see Pranks or Du-BEAT-eo there.

This should be updated to “I WANNA BE FLUID!” I’m just wondering how to convey that now since things like print books and hard copies of videos are so…. 1990. Maybe that’s why people are into modifying their outward appearance, it’s the only status marker left.
