Lane-splitting

Lane-splitting is now legal in California. This is horrible and a nightmare for careful, calm drivers.

  1. I can’t stand that. Pick a lane and act like everyone else in traffic. I can see you better. For this reason, I don’t like it when people ride along the side of the road, especially when there are no bike trails. I don’t like slowing down, but I also don’t like the idea you’re in my blind spot.

Recently I just yelled at this cyclist who decided to ride along the side of a road with no lane to either get in the middle of the lane or a sidewalk. (Yes, I know).

    1. That’s funny! When I bike, I prefer to ride in the middle of the lane as it’s much safer, but I frequently get yelled at by drivers who want me to move to the side of the road.

        • Those drivers are idiots.

      • Exactly! And when they just start zigzagging all over the place, that’s recipe for disaster.

  2. Didn’t know they had a term for this. In India, this is common practice among car drivers. If you’re even a little bit OCD, the sight of a car straddling the lane markings will drive you insane. In the beginning you think this guy just swerved out of his lane to prevent an accident or something, but then the realization dawns upon you that this is intentional, when you see them go for miles and miles, bisecting the two lanes with perfect control.

For a moment I thought California made that legal, haha. Until I found out that lane splitting as a term only refers to motorcyclists.
