What I find annoying is how actively many Latin Americans are clinging to their grudge against Spain. Gosh, Spaniards left 200 years ago. Since then, they haven’t tried invading, they haven’t set up referendums on the Yucatan Peninsula, they haven’t sent Basque terrorists into Mendoza, they haven’t hired Paul Manafort to get Aznar elected president of Peru, they haven’t invested millions into trashing Latin American culture, they haven’t imprisoned and tortured any Chilean or Ecuadoran filmmakers or journalists, they haven’t accused Nicaraguans of crucifying Spanish toddlers or raping epileptic Spanish retirees.
They are a model former colonizer. I know a country that would kill for a colonizer like that.

Actually, it’s the US people who give me grief here. “I cannot understand this Spanish, and they are the evil empire, and this is irrelevant to my life,” they bleat. But I suppose they learn this from certain Latin Americans I avoid. But I do now remember that CHE op-ed Mayhew posted a while ago, that was so anti-Spain and that a lot of Latin Americanists loved — including my friend Nacho and his cuates. So I guess, yes, there are Latin Americans who … I just don’t run across Latin Americans in daily life who think about Spain much more than we do England.

According to several local and national media outlets, a group of senior students from the German school of Lanús known as Sociedad Escolar y Deportiva Alemana who were on a graduation trip in Bariloche decided to celebrate their coming of age by going to a nightclub “dressed up as a bunch of Nazis.” And once inside, they got into a fight with students from the Buenos Aires ORT school, a very well-known institution that caters mostly to the Jewish community.
