New Academic Year Resolutions

People are making some great New Academic Year resolutions, and I want some, too. So I came up with some:

1. I have 2 hours in the evenings between the time Klara falls asleep and N finishes cleaning the kitchen and sending his emails. I resolve not to do a lick of work in these two hours and dedicate them to reading novels and playing my Happy Farm. I can actually do both at the same time.

2. Hopefully, the weather starts to permit this soon: I resolve to go out for long walks with Klara at least 3 mornings out of 5 workdays.

3. I resolve to go back to doing my facial masks again because I’ve had no time for them for over a year. And I love my facial masks!

4. I resolve to bring lunch to work from home because the stuff at the cafeteria makes me feel sleepy. And I resolve to make real coffee for myself instead of the instant kind that I always make because I feel like I have no time to brew.

5. I resolve to read at least one beauty magazine a month because they make me happy.

Do you have any New Academic Year resolutions?

    1. Yes, I need a new machine. The one I have is horrible. It’s an experimental model that I got for free years ago. It brews coffee very fast but the result is very watery.

  1. I totally failed this summer. I wanted to get out in the sun but instead am as pale as a ghost and my vitamin D is abysmally low.

If I thought I had any chance of not cheating myself and actually doing the following consistently, these would be my resolutions:

    1) Get outside for 30 min every day
    2) Try to walk those 30 min every day (that’s about 1.5 miles leisurely pace)
    3) Purchase a heavy bag and do kickboxing once a week (used to do it, love it, keep not being able to make the classes)
    4) Take vitamin D (poor absorption from food) and B12
    5) Read with Middle Boy and Smurf before bed. I have been a bad mommy and haven’t been reading with Smurf very much. I hope he doesn’t grow up dumb. It’s true that parents spend less time with younger kids.
    6) Try to cook meatless 2x a week. I have a husband and 3 boys and they eat a ridiculous amount of food, mostly meat. The cooking time is killing me. I want to lighten it and be able to whip things in 20 min like the hipster moms on the web.
    7) Keep writing for fun. It’s really therapeutic.
    8) Keep drawing for fun. Same as above.
    9) Getting thin is hard to do. Try not to get any fatter. Will try No-S diet [basically no snacks, sweets, or seconds, except on S days (Sat, Sun, special occasions)]. But I know I will cheat here. guaranteed.
    10) Not get bummed out by grant rejected proposals, and instead focus on the awesomeness that are published research papers and graduated PhD students.

  2. Yes! I need this! It’s not only a new year, but a new job for me!

    1) Publish all those half-finished projects! This is by far the most important thing I need to do.
    2) Start some new teaching or public outreach initiative.
    3) Join that local sports club team that I’ve been eyeing, and consistently attend.
    4) Be more consistent on diet/exercise in general, and particularly while traveling.
    5) Find more awesome conferences to attend and get invited to give more talks.
    6) Save up some $ so the hubby and I can take a nice exotic vacation.
    7) Make new friends!
    8) Find a trustworthy colleague to help me on my grand plan to take over the world 😉
    9) Get another cat.

  3. Work out seriously at least every other day. Walk or bicycle fairly far the other days.
Go to sleep at a decent hour, get up soon after sunrise.

There are others but these are key.
