Just 3 days in, and I’m already mortified by the ridiculous, self-important and often simply offensive ways in which my side is reacting to the election. Here is an example:
This is nothing short of disgusting. Rape is a horrible crime. It’s not OK to call every annoyance or disappointment “rape” in order to self-aggrandize.
IINM this is the first presidential election that a significant portion of millenials lost.
They’re reacting to it the same way they react to all other disappointments – hysteria and drahma, much much draaaaahma.

Yeah it is embarassing. Many of my friends and college acquantainces are crying (literally), throwing temper tantrums, and being amazingly childish. Truly unhinged. They don’t realize how unbecoming of them it looks. And how it also vindicates everthing conservatives (particularly older ones) think of them…

What’s really bizarre, though, is that conservatives are doing the same thing. You’d think the winning side would be happy and relaxed. Instead, they come to this blog to scream “rancid cunt!” for no reason whatsoever. Unbecoming doesn’t begin to describe such behavior.

The only other point is that social media obviously highlights the extremes. every liberal media seems to be showing a few stupid college kids in black face and every conservative site is showing a few black people beating up a white person who voted for trump. Both are horrific (the physical violence is worse), but represent such a small part of america. With 330 milion people, i literally one in a million act out there will be 330 incidents per day. Usually about 10 incidents per month are reported, so basically one in a BILLION act out per day. I think people are starting to become more numb, which is a healthy response to all but the most serious (physical violence, threats etc).
Am glad you have focused on constructive advice moving your interests forward. Not surprising that you have done so, just gald you have ! (despite us often disagreeing on what that future advice will be!) Hope rest of texas trip ends up well

Nobody who has been teaching for 17 years is a Millennial. I’ve seen plenty of dramatic announcements of unfriendings on Facebook from non-Millennials.
The rest of the piece segues into a discussion about an art exhibit. Because if you’re truly dissociating from your body because Trump won, you need mental health counseling and help. Which you may or may not lose access to once this Congress gets done with the ACA.
I just had a conversation with my father who is a physician about what tests for illnesses that run in my family I should/shouldn’t get before January. Fun times.
Some people have much more to lose than others. There are always people who are genuinely fragile and people who are aggressively fragile. It’s hard to tell. I saw a lot of RTs late Tuesday night reminding alcoholics to stay sober and to call their sponsors instead of falling off the wagon. I do not follow Al-Anon or people who admit to being former alcoholics so this was unusual.

Some of it is hysterical and some of it is actually rooted in what will likely happen. Reality shows were around in numbers watched by large amount of people since 1992. This really isn’t a millennial thing.
Go look at these https://twitter.com/i/moments/796417517157830656moments. It’s not all Millennials. A common conservative trope for over 25 years is the social opprobrium people feel for saying racial slurs in polite company.
Plenty of people voted for someone who affected emotional lability and the filter of a toddler. Why do you expect dignity and stoicism in reaction to that, from any side?

Another new trend is people eagerly and happily describing how miserable their children are, how they are freaking out and crying. No child cries over an election unless the parents work hard to freak them out. It’s cruel and disgusting.
Once again, even in Ukraine, with its horrible traditions of family cruelty, nobody that I’ve seen is scaring kids with the very real prospects of bombs falling on them as a result of this election.

Ukrainians, by the way, are staying positive an optimistic, even though for them this election brings real danger.

Your president-elect was crying on twitter after the 2012 elections, claiming the elections were rigged and let’s all march in protest against this travesty.
For 8 full years your people refused to accept a black president as your president. Calling him illegitimate, foreign born muslim. But some college kids march in protest and it’s all wah wah millenials, grow up.

They won and they are feeling sorry for themselves. I thought I would hate seeing them smug and jubilant. But they are not. They are sad, angry and whiny. Incredible.

By contrast, do you remember the sheer jubilation after Obama was elected? It was like Christmas morning. And it would have been similarly joyful for Hillary. I really think a lot of the liberal sadness right now is that we were so ready to celebrate having a woman president. So many of us were smiling and taking pictures. We had champagne ready to pop. And our joyful anticipation was met with a sickening thud.
But there is no joy for the conservatives. Only the grim knowledge that they beat the liberals. And perhaps that points to the fundamental pessimism and nihilism of conservatives. Can one truly celebrate taking health care away from people? Does one cheer for deliberately increasing air pollution? It’s just a joyless agenda at basis.
Exactly, there is no joy. I think they know or suspect that he won’t give them what they want because it’s not in his or anybody’s power.

Well, I was never very impressed by the arguments “but Billy did it first”… do we really want to win because we shout and whine louder, or because we have some moral superiority?
As for Trump supporters grieving too – maybe they did not expect this election result, which left them in a weird situation – they understand that they cannot stop the history, but now there will be nobody to blame for that after they won? Maybe they’d rather prefer to keep blaming Democrats for everything?

I agree. I am vaguely disgusted by the histrionics that some have participated in. And its not as if I’m emotionless. If truth be told, I have actually cried about this election. But it’s in reference to policy. His plan for the first 100 days chills me to the bone. Thinking about the Supreme Court or the Cabinet he promises to appoint makes my heart skip a beat. I’m worried about what will happen to my parents retirement nest eggs when the stock mark inevitably crashes and the economy tanks. And I’m genuinely concerned we will become involved in a needless and dangerous war.
So I do get being troubled by this presidency. But I’m also not saying things like “this election negates who I am.” Huh? What does that even mean? Its as if they have taken the air out if the room–if that makes sense. Like I can’t speak about my very deep concerns about this election because people are running about grasping each other and talking of being raped. So for all its showy inclusiveness, this sort of rhetoric actually silences me.

That’s exactly how I feel. I was stunned and horrified by this result. But I don’t want to participate in a contest of who can present a greater woundedness. As you say, I want to discuss what this means and not how it feels.

One example: A rich, high profile writer/blogger who lives in manhattan wrote an article about how she’s afraid of having kids with her korean husband (she’s white) now that Trump won.

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. I saw a piece by somebody who is afraid of being deported because she is a child of immigrants. Who are well-off citizens. And she is obviously a citizen, too.
There are people who are in actual danger of being deported, so let’s be more about them.

As I’ve said before one of my friends, who is a financial advisor was posting pictures of the Dow Futures drop on Election night (and telling people it was a bigger drop than on 9/11) and told people to call their financial advisors and not to blindly act. When I said it was an emotional reaction and to wait a day, he said “Well the last two times that happened, the market fall lasted 6 months and lost 50% from top to bottom.” It rallied, but still. I don’t get all of these wealthy people who voted Republican because of taxes but failed to note the likely agita of stock exchanges when so much of their wealth is tied up in these instruments. You would not see this freakout with a Cruz or a Kasich election.

I seriously have no idea what could be done. I live in a state with a Republican super majority and the only way things don’t pass is that there’s a faction of Republicans who don’t agree with the state house speaker.

It’s not the war which worries me so much as the unpredictability of the person who is likely to declare it. HRC is a hawk, but she was a fairly predictable one.

Republicans are bad on economy in general. Reagan, Bush- they rely on outdated theories that don’t work and everything collapses. I’m not expecting an immediate collapse but once Trump gives Paul Ryan a free reign, we’ll see the sad donkey gleefully wash the economy down the toilet. All Republicans know how to do on terms of the economy is help billionaires take even more money out of the country and put it into offshore accounts. They are not even trying to come up with anything else.

I completely agree with the sentiment that they need to go away now. The whole Dem leadership, their families, their pet poodles, they should all resign in shame. They lost in a situation when you’ve got to be every kind of inept to lose, and I don’t just mean the presidency.

The lack of self-awareness or willingness to confront the fact that they blew it that I’m seeing among progressives is just astonishing. Hopefully it’s just the initial shock and it will wear off.
