The left has stopped even trying to do anything on the economy, so it keeps fighting and re-fighting the culture wars that it already won. The result is invariably ugly. SJWs are a symptom of the Liberals’ complete impotence and even reluctance to achieve anything economically.

I would say that the left cannot hope to win a culture war if they approach it as such, but they can win (and have won) a great many cultural issues. They cannot win a culture war as such because they will push people too far on redefining their own identities and proclaiming the correct pieties. However, if they want a civil libertarian victory on cultural issues then they can have that, and indeed they mostly get that.
You’ll never get a majority of Americans to vocally and publicly debase themselves with public pronouncements of guilt about our white heteropatriarchical cis-centric etc. etc. society. You can totally get them to support rights for cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, etc. minorities. Some of those victories have taken longer than others, but they can totally happen in this society. You can get the public to oppose racist policy and support (to an extent) greater scrutiny of the police. What you cannot get the public to do is run around apologizing for privilege. When you push too hard on “correct” identities then people push back and vote for a guy like Trump. Trump might not personally care about these identity issues, but he sure knows how to talk to people who do care.
I have less of a problem with how Clinton campaigned than I do with how a lot of smarmy liberals talked about the alleged cultural moment that they thought we are living in. They thought that they were on the cusp of a thousand year victory over the GOP, the triumph of a diverse new America that would sweep all else aside. Turns out that they spent too much time exulting over that and not enough time making common cause with people over concrete pocketbook issues.

If I didn’t know better I’d assume that you have been attending my department’s meetings for the past few years. The people in question are mostly pushing on things other than cultural issues, but the dynamic is the same. And, yes, sometimes they push on cultural liberalism, not getting that they don’t need to preach to the converted.

I have been predicting that an upcoming culture battle will be on language. The SJWs have not won this one yet. Today I read about the subject by a mainstream conservative in the Wall Street Journal he said:
“Fifty percent of all Americans acknowledged being bothered when they came into contact with immigrants that spoke little or no English, a figure that rose to 58% among seniors and 64% of white working class Americans.”
and
“As a country we can and should place more emphasis on new immigrants acquiring English-language competence and on the process of civic integration. What we cannot do is reverse, the shifts in the composition of the population.”

The article argues against the Alt-Right white ethno-state idea but advocates for more back bone on linguistics.
The SJW and Jeb! Bush position is that Americans should cave and have everything in English and Spanish. Also do not judge people that have been in the country for over a decade and can’t buy a scratch off ticket at a gas station using English. In France it would be cave and have everything in French and Arabic.
The right wing position can be it is an immigrant’s responsibility to learn the language of the host country where ever that may be; not the other way around. I have been able to convince even some left wing wing people to jump on this side of the argument from the SJW, Jeb! Bush side. We are already at 50%. This is a winnable argument as well. That number can go even higher if more people care about the subject. This could be a possible culture war victory for the conservatives.

There is no immigrant who is not desperate to learn English. But that requires resources. Are you in favor of providing resources to teach English to immigrants?

Yes, I think it would be worth it, if it means Americans can travel all over our beautiful country knowing only one language. Unlike Europe where it would take seven or so languages to make such a trip.
Hispanic Studies majors would be good people to hire for such a position.
The other thing for this to work is the number of migrants coming should be reasonable for assimilation, not Merkel style open border madness. I don’t know what the reasonable number is exactly. Hopefully Trump will stop illegal immigration. Next it can be discussed what a good number is to let in legally. Also if we should let people in based on merit instead of the lottery system.
