The Boeing Scandal

Opposition to Trump should not venture into the territory of “let’s allow greedy corporations to rob is blind to spite Trump.” It’s a screaming shame that taxpayers should pay Boeing  $170,000,000 “to help determine the capabilities of this complex military aircraft that serves the unique requirements.” Have you, folks, seen the report about the ridiculously out-of-hand spending in the Pentagon? Isn’t it ridiculous that you and I should be throwing hundreds of millions at Boeing and a crowd of other corporate welfare queens so that they can use the money “to help determine capabilities”?

And you know what? I would have loved it if Obama had been the one to call these freaks out. But if it had to be Trump, I’ll take that.

  1. This is where trump has a real chance to fundamentally change the government. No other politician in the country would do this, because he has gotten here in a way basically no other politician ever has. Doesn’t owe anyone anything. Actions like this and the carrier deal and then the supposed softbank deal ($50 billion invested and 50,000 jobs… staggering numbers even if only somewhat exagerated in the end). The upside is huge.

I say this while still say that it makes a ton of sense to be skeptical of trump. He has played a little fast and loose with how much power is he giving to his kids in terms of govt access and then his businesses. So would be awful if he turns into some corrupt kleptocrat, but its up to the public to keep on the pressure.

But there might just be a chance that he will forever change how we see the corrupt prior interworkings. Should be a fun 4 (maybe 8?) years…

By the same token, we shouldn’t cheer his methods just because we approve of his target.

You do realize the military-industrial complex is one of the largest job programs in the United States and is very much tied to the nation-state? :p

It’s more than a little funny that these astronomical costs are for an updated plane to transport the President that can survive World War III ( The Mushrooming Drones). I have no idea how much of this is graft and how much of this is really what it costs to build a plane with those capabilities. (I assume there are capabilities and features not found on a normal 747.) If dude’s ok rattling around in a cargo plane, let him! . He seems personally willing to waste tons of taxpayer money for his personal comfort.

    1. I think most of it is graft. And if anybody really wanted to use this money to create jobs, imagine how many state daycare centers could be opened around the country for 3 billion. I don’t think even the best president ever shoukd be guarded against a very unlikely calamity at a cost that could pay for really needed services for people.

      1. Of course most of it is graft. I’m optimistic in thinking that a non trivial percentage isn’t graft. Then there those who think union wages are graft so…

Alas, we don’t live in the timeline with a PEOTUS who thinks this is a good idea. We’re also not in the
midst of World War III (a link to an article on the Lanham Act). That may change very shortly.
