Sippy Cup Advice

Whoever suggested giving Klara cheerios, THANK YOU! She’s loving them. I thought, for some reason, that cheerios were huge but they are tiny little things. She gets so absorbed in playing with them that I get to have a tranquil breakfast.

Yesterday Klara had her first borscht and it went very well. She seems to have liked it.

This week I’ll also try some white fish, like somebody else here suggested. Now that I heard that Klara had a tortilla with melted cheese at school and loved it, I am less fearful about giving her regular foods.

Now I need more advice. How do I teach her to use a sippy cup? I have a regular one and one with a floating straw. But I don’t know how to communicate to her what to do with them. We didn’t have these things when I was growing up, so I’m clueless.

On the positive side, she knows how to drink from a glass or a regular cup. Of course, it’s very messy but she figured that out easily.

  1. I suggest the Munchkin Miracle 360 Trainer cup. It is not really a miracle but it works like a regular cup without spilling. She will figure out how other sippy cups work by trial and error but I like these for their similarity to regular cups.

  2. If she can imitate you drinking out of a regular cup, she can imitate you drinking out of a sippy cup. Maybe you should have one too.

    1. She didn’t imitate me, though. She was just thirsty, I think. There was a little cup floating in the bathtub, so she grabbed it and drank from it during bath time.

Those sippy cups are even hard for me to master.

  3. Our kids learned to drink out of regular (small) cups at daycare and we never quite got around to teaching them sippy cups. I would say, why bother if she can already drink out of a regular cup? She’ll get really good at it very quickly. We do still have some accidental spills of course but it is not a big deal to mop up (they just have water and milk and we don’t have carpets). Even the 18 month old knows to pick up her cup from the table when thirsty and put it back on the table when she’s finished, so no drippy sippy cups trailing all around the house. Just my 2 c 🙂

    1. Yeah, I don’t even know why one needs sippy cups. But I’m always afraid I’ll deprive her of some typical American experiences. I don’t want to be one of those immigrants who bug kids with their stories about how they did everything back home.

These are my own immigrant hangups but you are definitely right.
