So what now? Are they going to continue trying to repeal the AHA or can we have some respite from this whole charade while they go do some work for a change? Does today’s failure of the skinny bill close the discussion for a while?

What’s next? Don’t expect peace or sanity. Trump reportedly has be using ACA budget for other purposes, including running ads for repeal. Some Republican governors (you may know one or two) have been working to ensure the ACA marketplace crashes and burns in their state — and then blame the failure on the law rather than their own actions. Plus Trump needs cost savings from ACA repeal to pay for his tax cuts for the rich. This isn’t done.
McConnell has proven his incompetence as a majority leader in the Senate. You don’t bring bills to the floor when you know they are going to fail, regardless of what Trump says. McConnell doesn’t have the guts to stand up to anyone, much less lead.

They only have 2,5 not-completely-crazy members among them in the Senate so yeah, anything is possible.

My hunch:
Republicans blame everyone but themselves.
Democrats clutch pearls about Russia.
Part of the public finds both sides to be useless (for different reasons).
Trump voters continue supporting Trump (because they don’t care about what happens in Washington DC)

Actually, lately Democrats in Washington seem to have gotten it together and are doing a good job on messaging and strategy. They seem to be focusing on the economy and healthcare, haven’t heard much about Russia lately. Chuck Schumer’s “Better Deal” proposal reminds me of the Contract with America idea, and we saw how successful that was. Of course, the loudest parts of the Democratic base are consistently out of touch and irritating, so we’ll see if the message gets out over their incessant braying.

Do they not realize it’s going to fuck up their nice employer insurance? I mean, sheer inertia should lead comfortable people to oppose this, and yes, the idea of bestirring oneself to defend the status quo is oxymoronic.

You may find people reluctant to talk about it because they are afraid of someone going weird on them. Yes, Trump has a core of support that’s largely unwavering. The core is much smaller than the numbers needed to win an election in the US.
We’ve had guests from China recently, and they tell us that the people are expecting Trump to start a nuclear war with China. China is arming the border with North Korea in order to react to a US attack.

“I’m not sure if it’s really being appreciated just how comprehensively the Republicans were just fucked over.
See, the Republicans have been trying to pass these godawful healthcare bills through a process called budget reconciliation, which, among other things, protects the bill from being filibustered in the Senate and only requires a simple majority of 50 votes (rather than 60, which the Republicans don’t have).
The thing is, the Senate can only consider one budget reconciliation bill per topic per year. Of course, if the bill dies in committee and never comes to an official vote, it doesn’t count- which is why they’ve been able to keep hammering away at the issue.
This bill, though, was allowed to come to the Senate floor, because the Republicans thought they’d secured the votes. Collins, Murkowski and the Democrats would vote no, everyone else would vote yes, and Pence would break the tie. And then McCain completely fucked them. And it was almost certainly a calculated move; he voted to allow the bill to come to the floor. Had McCain allowed it to die in committee, McConnell could have come back with yet another repeal bill; but he let it come to a vote, and now they can’t consider another budget reconciliation bill for the rest of the fiscal year. The Senate needs 60 votes to pass any kind of healthcare reform now.
So now they’re caught between a rock and a hard place. Either they concede defeat on the issue and try again later (causing a big, unpopular stink that could damage elections if they try it before the midterms, or risking losing the slim majority they already have if they wait) or they actually sit down with the democrats like adults and write a halfway decent healthcare bill.
