Do you know anybody who keeps complaining about how selfish, uncaring and self-centered other people are? Narcissists love to project their defining qualities on others. Anybody who is not dedicating 100% of their energy, time and attention to the narcissist is loudly denounced by him as a first-rate egotist.
Bonus points if they complain loudly and for an extended period of time about people even requesting their assistance, and then volunteer your time to those same people. They get all the martyr points, without having to waste any of their energy!

Oh yes. My favorite personal experience in this realm was like this:
“Wait, where is my coat? And my boots??”
“Oh, I donated them to charity. Don’t you feel bad for people in need? How selfish are you?”
“But what will I wear in winter?”
“You’ll figure something out. Think about others for a change.”
“But why didn’t you donate your own coat and boots?”
“But what will I wear in winter? Do you want me to go cold, get sick and die? You are so self-centered.”

As a narcissist myself I must agree that’s quite true.
While my complaints about others are quite valid, one look in the mirror exposes the simple fact that a lot of things I detest about certain others can often be just as true about me.
This fact can be quite unnerving, especially when I feel the need to wail out about “the stupidities of the world” in general.
