In terms that everybody will finally be able to understand, the Ukrainian Revolution of 2013 happened because Ukrainians were fed up with the president whose campaign had been organized by Paul Manafort. 

And if everybody just listened to what Ukrainians were saying back then, we wouldn’t have to deal with Manafort’s next candidate now. 

Obviously, Manafort is a dumb pawn. He’s a symptom and not the disease. But it’s a symptom that should have been noticed earlier. The name of the actual disease is:

An international conspiracy of oligarchs to use the popular resentment generated by the globalization for further enrichment.

    I get that, but Trump’s base is still middle class and above white people who have been less impacted by globalization than others. This is not an Amazon warehouse worker who’s afraid his job will get automated. This is a car dealership owner.

    Now the question becomes, what is this car dealership owner so resentful of?

    I see the same thing in india, too. Techbros making shitloads of money (as a result of globalization, mind you), resentful of minorities in the country and voting a literal fascist party into power. And this is the so-called educated class.

      You know who made the Russian revolution in 1917? The educated upper middle classes and not the truly oppressed and dispossessed children of yesterday’s slaves. And who made the US peaceful revolution of the 1960s?

      The revolutionary agent is always the comfortable bourgeoisie. Because once your lower level Maslow needs are fed, only then do you become interested in higher level social concerns.

      A revolution can be a force for good or for something extremely crappy. But the revolutionary agent will be the bourgeoisie, as history shows.

        And also, who protested against Putin in the only mass protests of his long regime? The very upper middle classes. Who made the Ukrainian revolution? The ultra educated, comfortably well to do people.

        Come to think of it, who’s supporting Bernie? My students aren’t while students at Yale are. And Bernie is as revolutionary as we currently get on the opposite side of Trump.

      An old collegemate of mine got in touch with me through whatsapp a few months ago. I hadn’t talked to him in more than 10 years. He had just founded a startup and asked if I would work for it, part-time. Our conversation drifted to indian politics (obviously). He wants the genocide of muslims and christians in the country, and he’s serious. Modi is too moderate for him.

      Graduated from one of the best colleges in the country, came to the US to do a masters in MIT, went back to India to work in finance, has a top 2% cushy life. And he wants muslims in the country to die or go to pakistan (sorry el, he’s taken).

      It’s one thing to be easily led by demagogues when you’re poor and desperate. This guy wouldn’t know what hardship or oppression is, but he, an upper-caste Hindu in India, feels victimized. What do you do with someone like that?

        Remind yourself you drifted apart for a reason? Decline his offer of part-time work?

        I bet he rants about scheduled caste and backward tribe quotas, blah blah blah. I’ll bet money he didn’t have a humanities education worth a damn at any of the institutions he attended. I talk to so many of these guys and they are the most rank socially inept dullards outside of their fields. To a person they think they are God’s gift to womankind.

        Of course he went back. If he feels victimized by all these people imagine how he took living in Boston.
