NYTimes: Jews Are Recognized as an Ethnic Group

The new head of civil rights at the Education Department signaled a significant policy shift that explicitly defines Jews as not only a religion but also an ethnic origin. This is really really great.

I stopped reading after the first paragraph because spats between bored rich students at Rutgers are of no interest to me but I’m very happy for this move. The idea that one is somehow less Jewish because one doesn’t practice Judaism is hurtful and wrong.

The article is very poorly written so I don’t even know why I linked to it.

As a non-practicing Jew, the notion that the Dept. of Education only cares about affirmative action when Jews are involved is repulsive. I can think of few actions that can stoke antisemitism as much as this.

  Jews are probably the last group in the world to need affirmative action for college. So I don’t think that’s what is at issue. It’s some silly spat over $5 admission fees at Rutgers or whatever.

The actual issue in this article is the Department of Education attempting to turn the political issue of Israel vs. the Palestinians, and both groups’ advocates fighting over Zionism and the BDS movement on American college campuses, into a “national origin discrimination” issue.

And that’s RIDICULOUS!

There are valid reasons to oppose the vile anti-Israel BDS movement in America, but those reasons don’t fall within the purview of the Department of Education.

  Tomorrow everybody will forget who whined over what at Rutgers. But this important determination will remain. All of these “movements on college campuses” are childish games. Who cares. There are more important things going on.
