Vile Beliefs

On a FB college prof page, a college professor is complaining that a student quoted the Bible in an essay and he had to be exposed to her “vile and inane beliefs.”

Leaving aside the extraordinary unprofessionalism and the grievous lack of culture, let’s consider our favorite academic virtues of diversity and inclusion. If the professor teaches chi-chi fru-fru rich white kids, OK, fine. But if there’s anybody in the classroom who is black, Hispanic, or working class of any race, it’s highly probable that they are church-going Christians. How included are they going to feel by the fanatical professor?

And, of course, the extreme cultural and intellectual impoverishment is sad, too.

    To be fair, we do not know what exactly was quoted and in which context.

    The student could quote Sodom and Gomorrah story with the subsequent description of the evil of homosexuality.

    Or, “A woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a woman’s cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.”

    Or, “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.”

      Anything is possible but the post I reacted to said only what I reported. “The student quoted the Bible and I can’t believe I have to be exposed to these vile and inane religious beliefs.” I wish I screenshoted but I was in such a rush to unfollow the group that I didn’t.

      The professor in question is an intellectually and linguistically impoverished individual. We have way too many of those, unfortunately.

    I might be biased. I read the bible every day. But it is well known by scholars that the Bible is a literary work that encompasses many different genres. Poetry. Narrative. Law. History. Epistles. I realize people have strong opinions about it both for and against it, but to try to completely dismiss it is utterly ignorant.

    This has been happening on college campuses for many years and Christians are dismayed by it. Students are regularly shamed and ridiculed for their beliefs. And yet America’s moral framework originated from the bible. What is wrong with “Thou shalt not murder? Thou shalt not commit adultery?” What is wrong with “Love your neighbor as yourself?” I get why people object to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength” but what bad can come from “honoring your father and your mother”? And yet many will read this and think me infantile in my thinking. Or just plain dumb. And to know that a college professor is complaining about a student in this fashion shows–at the very least–how disrespectful he or she is of the historical significance of the bible. And more so–the mentality of his or her student.

    Did anyone tell the professor any of these things? He needs education!

      Perhaps that’s what he objected to! The trendy left these days seems very much in favor of adultery, and very much against the sort of traditional family roles that would require honoring one’s parents.

      I’m so old I remember the Bible being taught in college as a “foundations of literature and Western thought” course.

    Can you imagine the hullabaloo if a student quoted the Koran or the Torah (or the Ramayana) and the professor talked about “vile and inane beliefs”???
